St. Stanisław in Bielsko-Biała

St. Stanisław in Bielsko-Biała (2019)

In Bielsko-Biała, a computer game was created about the history of the church of st. Stanislaus the Bishop and Martyr in Stary Bielsko. It is based on the digitization of the temple and its 3D model, which were made for the purpose of a virtual tour of the historic church. The implementation by Dr.Michał Hyjk is a comprehensive interactive guided tour system containing smartphones, MR Oculus Quest 1 goggles and haptic boards

The current number of users: 15 030

Social impact: schools and universities have obtained an e-learning and communication tool, the region has a modern guided tour in 4 languages and digital accessibility for the disabled

Welcome to the project of a virtual tour of the Church of St. Stanisław in Bielsko-Biała

The first interactive information system in Poland in a sacred building combining augmented reality, virtual reality and the user’s smartphones. The system consists of applications and client devices.

Haptic tables

Samsung Tab S4 tablets with haptic software with energy saving function and responsive to the sight of the face. They allow for the display of content from the parish without the need for printing.

Gogle oculus quest

They allow you to explore the guide in VR and AR technology. Thanks to full wireless connection, the user can freely move around the physical space.

Private server

Operating in the church, it is a telecommunications service that allows constant and free access to the data of a virtual guide without the need to have a mobile boarding house. While on the premises of the church, choose the Wi-Fi network called St. Stanisław.

App:

It is a computer game in the WebVR environment, which is a gamified, 30-minute history lesson. It is friendly to both children and parents. The application has accessibility for the disabled. The guide consists of 4 levels. Each of them concerns a different part of the church, from the description of the district to the interior of the temple. Historical threads from pagan times to the baroque period are discussed. The guide does not require permanent installation and is compatible with any smartphone, laptop or VR goggles. The loading time of the guide is from 30 seconds to 2 minutes because it has to load a lot of sounds and objects.

Project history:
From supporting the visualization system of wooden architecture to an international sacred art museum.

In 2017, Michał Hyjek conducted research on the aspects of augmented reality in terms of visiting large-format museums and religious buildings in Zarszyn and Królik Polski, which are on the Bieszczady wooden architecture trail. The research showed a positive effect of optimization and gamification of purely measuring content on the increase of interest and staying in the scanned place.

In 2018, DVL was asked to design the so-called the new function of the building (not sacred) after renovation, which was to create an intelligent, interactive museum showing a cross-section of works of art (frescoes, painting, sculpture) from 3 eras in the area for 800 years. DVL Global, the main contractor and designer of the system, used the research and knowledge of Dr. Michał Hyjk, i.e. research in sacred / museum facilities. The know-how was used in the project of gamification of the interaction of users of the sacred museum using the visitors’ smartphones and the infrastructure available in the church.
In December 2019, a digital guide is handed over with multimedia infrastructure (Oculus Quest) strictly made in accordance with the standards of access for the disabled. While walking around the church, use the next elements of the story on VR goggles, a tablet or audio description made in Polish, English, Czech and German.
Since 2019 (and the grass is still there), the system has been used very actively, based on the solutions and research of Dr. Michał Hyjek.

The local community uses the system:
– 2000 participants from local schools guided as part of art history lessons from Bielsko-Biała, Cieszyn and Kraków
– 1123 mobile application downloads for the visitor to use the application remotely
– 700 people on online classes in the 3D Mozilla Hubs environment dedicated to students / adults in remote education
– 8021 people used the project’s website / users from the Czech Republic, Germany and Poland

International scope of the project:
– During the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the Polish Embassy in Rome – a fashion show was organized in the capital of Italy using graphic and multimedia facilities from the church guide. About 300 people took part in the show
– Based on the browser version of the guide, art history classes are conducted for Erasmus students at the University
– Visits of the Italian Ambassadors to Poland on December 1, 2021 of His Excellency Mario Anders with a special guided tour
– At the DVL stand during the largest multimedia fair in the world, Gitex 2021 in Dubai, the VR Goggles Oculus Quest 1 and 2 were presented, containing a 3D model of the church and a symmetrical system used

Awards:
After the facade of the church of St. Stanisława Stare Bielsko, in Bielsko-Biała, the facility with an interactive guiding system, was awarded the title of the Modernization of the Year 2019 for the contractor and the author of the project in the church. In the Modernization of the Year & Construction of the 21st century competition, 460 applications were submitted to the competition in the edition.
